Following the abrupt shutdown of illicit crypto marketplace Huione, blockchain analytics firm Elliptic has tracked the emergence of over thirty identical clone sites. These copycat platforms mimic Huione’s user interface and service offerings, seeking to exploit brand recognition and lure unsuspecting users.
Huione was seized last week following a law enforcement action targeting darknet transactions. Immediately after, clones began appearing under similar domain names and storefront layouts. Elliptic’s monitoring indicates these sites are aggressive in steering traffic through social media ads, phishing messages, and deceptive search engine placements.
The cloned sites attempt to authenticate users via Web2 login overlays, prompting downloads of malicious browser extensions. These add ons capture wallet credentials and initiate automatic fund withdrawals. Elliptic estimates that these cloned operations may trap hundreds of potential victims before they are taken down.
Landing page code similarity analysis reveals reuse of templates and redirection patterns across the clones suggesting a coordinated campaign likely managed by experienced threat actors. Attribution remains unclear, though Elliptic notes the cloning began mere hours after Huione ceased operations.
Elliptic is urging users to confirm any crypto marketplace URLs against official listings and warns against blindly trusting search engine results. Additional alerts advise users to disable browser extensions acquired this week and clear cache and cookies if visited suspect sites.
Marketplace cloning remains a major concern for the blockchain ecosystem. It undermines trust and exposes new and veteran users to phishing and malware threats. Elliptic plans to collaborate with domain registrars and global crypto platforms to flag and remove malicious clones quickly.
In their report, Elliptic emphasized that clone proliferation following Huione’s takedown underscores the need for more robust user education, platform verification systems, and web infrastructure resilience.
