Ronin Network to Reinvent Itself as Ethereum Layer 2 by 2026

In a strategic pivot, the blockchain network originally built for Axie Infinity   Ronin   has announced plans to migrate back into the Ethereum ecosystem as a full fledged Layer 2 solution by 2026. The shift reflects a renewed ambition to expand its scope beyond gaming into a broader Web3 platform.

Launched as a sidechain in 2021, Ronin emerged as a solution to Ethereum’s high gas fees and slow throughput. Although it delivered faster and cheaper transactions, the network’s reputation took a hit when a bridge exploit resulted in losses exceeding $620 million. That incident accelerated concerns about security and trust.

The migration to Ethereum Layer 2 aims to address these vulnerabilities by leveraging Ethereum’s more advanced infrastructure and tighter security protocols. It also paves the way for Ronin to operate as a general purpose chain   supporting not only decentralized gaming but also DeFi, SocialFi, and other Web3 applications. According to the roadmap, the migration is expected to complete during the first half of 2026.

Still, the path won’t be free of obstacles. The team must carefully manage technical migration risks, navigate a crowded L2 market, and rebuild confidence with users and developers wary of past setbacks.

If executed well, this transformation could elevate Ronin from a gaming focused chain to a versatile blockchain ecosystem   aligned with the broader Ethereum infrastructure and positioned to support a wider array of decentralized applications.
