A senior adviser to the European Central Bank has issued a stark warning: Europe risks ceding financial sovereignty unless it establishes common regulations for euro pegged stablecoins. In a commentary, the adviser noted that U.S. policymakers have already advanced stablecoin legislation through the GENIUS Act, while euro based alternatives remain underdeveloped and underregulated.
Despite the EU adopting MiCA regulation, euro pegged stablecoins still represent less than €350 million in circulation compared to over $250 billion globally tied to U.S. dollar pegging. The difference in regulatory approaches between the U.S. and EU could incentivize dollar denominated tokens, cementing the U.S. dollar’s global dominance in digital finance. Observers warn that small but powerful stablecoin usage could weaken ECB policy tools especially as payments, savings, and settlement systems gravitate toward U.S. rails.
The advisor stressed the urgency for Europe to accelerate digital euro deployment, streamline licensing frameworks, and foster aligned institution backed euro stablecoins. Without a coordinated strategy, fragmented national approaches may lead to instability, arbitrage opportunities, and diminished monetary autonomy.
