Coinbase Receives MiCA License and Sets Luxembourg as European Hub

Coinbase has secured its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from Luxembourg’s financial regulator, a milestone that establishes its continental base under robust jurisdictional oversight. This approval marks a significant breakthrough for what will become the exchange’s central EU hub, replacing prior headquarters in Ireland.

Under the MiCA framework, Luxembourg’s credentials are well regarded offering strict oversight while enabling pan-European operation. Coinbase expects to launch regulated services this year, including spot trading, custody, staking, and wallet solutions for retail and institutional clients across all 27 EU member states.

The move denotes a strategic pivot from Ireland to Luxembourg, where regulatory agility and a stable compliance infrastructure support rapid deployment. The exchange has already lined up staff for compliance, legal, and operations teams and is renovating its facilities ahead of a broad service rollout.

Coinbase will adhere to MiCA’s stringent mandates such as capital buffers, secure safekeeping, transparent governance, and insider controls as well as prepare for forthcoming stablecoin regulations. With Luxembourg’s support, the company hopes to expand token offerings under EU rules, attract institutional flows, and deepen its product suite within a consistent regulatory environment.

The approval responds to increasing investor demand for regulated crypto access and positions Coinbase to scale across Europe. It also signals a competitive advantage over exchanges still navigating licensing regimes and fragmented service rollout timelines.
