HIVE Digital Acquires 7.2 MW Toronto Data Center to Drive Sovereign AI Hosting Ambitions

HIVE Digital Technologies has secured a 7.2 megawatt data center in Toronto, Canada, marking its first major move into high performance computing and AI infrastructure under its subsidiary, BUZZ HPC.

The June acquisition strategically embeds HIVE within Canada’s largest tech ecosystem, where universities, research institutions and AI innovators flourish, and dense fiber connectivity and AI research activity are concentrated.

The Toronto site is slated for upgrade to liquid cooled Tier 3 facilities capable of supporting up to 5,000 next generation GPUs.
That infrastructure will underpin cloud services, model training and inference workloads focused on Canadian enterprises and government initiatives that require sovereign control over data infrastructure.

HIVE’s pivot reflects a broader ambition to diversify beyond bitcoin mining and fuel sovereign AI compute capacity.
By building infrastructure entirely in Canada and operating under local ownership, the company aims to offer secure, locally governed AI hosting solutions.

The move aligns with growing global demand for localized AI compute infrastructure amid concerns over data residency and supply chain sovereignty.
Toronto’s combination of renewable hydroelectric energy supply, technical talent, and regulatory friendliness makes it a logical choice.

This transformation positions HIVE as a contender in national AI infrastructure development not just a crypto miner.
It offers clients in government and regulated sectors access to secure, renewable powered compute assets under Canadian jurisdiction.

Investment in HPC via BUZZ HPC signals HIVE’s commitment to sustainable, green powered growth.
Much of its existing crypto operations rely on hydropower in regions like Paraguay and Canada, and the new facility is expected to fit within that eco conscious framework.

In essence, HIVE is betting that demand for sovereign AI cloud services is on the rise and is positioning its Toronto data center as a gateway to that future.
