Prestigious auction house Christie’s has unveiled a new real estate division that will solely accept cryptocurrency payments. The initiative targets high net worth digital asset holders by facilitating the listing and sale of premium properties including penthouses and luxury estates with payments in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or stablecoins.
As part of the pilot, Christie’s has already shortlisted a flagship Manhattan property and villas in Dubai for sale exclusively via crypto. The division integrates Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) compliance within its platform, partnering with regulated custodians and on chain escrow services to ensure transparency.
Christie’s claims the move is a natural progression, catering to clients who prefer blockchain transactions. It also aims to cut closing times and transaction fees relative to traditional fiat based real estate deals. Legal advisory panels are preparing guidelines to translate smart contract escrow mechanisms into enforceable contracts.
Experts note that crypto only real estate deals still occupy a niche segment but indicate luxury markets adapting to digital wealth. If successful, Christie’s platform may encourage wider adoption among legal and real estate professionals.
