Bitvavo Secures MiCA License from Dutch Regulator to Expand in Europe

Bitvavo, one of Europe’s leading crypto exchanges, has officially received a Markets in CryptoAssets (MiCA) license from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets. This milestone enables the Amsterdambased platform to operate across all EU member countries, as well as in Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, under a unified regulatory regime.

The license marks Bitvavo’s transition from a national player to a full-fledged pan-European service provider. CEO Mark Nuvelstijn emphasized that compliance with MiCA’s investor protection, transparency, and capital requirements allows Bitvavo to strengthen its position in the market. Chief Risk Officer Jeetan Patel noted that the approval process proceeded efficiently in collaboration with regulators.

By aligning with MiCA, Bitvavo streamlines its operations, eliminating the need for separate authorizations in each country. This newfound regulatory clarity bolsters corporate confidence and ensures customers of consistent legal safeguards across borders. The move is expected to support existing registrations in France, Italy, Spain, and Austria, while paving the way for future service expansion .

Market observers interpret today’s approval as part of a broader wave, where major exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, OKX, and Paybis are also deploying MiCAbased licenses. Paybis reports a 70 percent jump in trading volumes from EU users following MiCA’s regulatory implementation.

Moving ahead, Bitvavo plans to use the MiCA framework to introduce new products, including advanced derivatives, staking services, and tokenized assets. The unified license enables the onboarding of institutional clients seeking regulated crypto services across Europe without incurring crossborder friction.

This development underscores MiCA’s intent to cultivate a transparent and scalable crypto market in the EU. As more exchanges gain the license, Europe may solidify its status as a global hub for compliant digital asset firms bringing improved investor protection without compromising innovation.
