RedStone Oracles: Bitcoin is more of a portfolio diversifier than a safe-haven asset

A recent analysis by RedStone Oracles challenges the prevailing narrative of Bitcoin as a safe-haven asset. The study reveals that Bitcoin’s correlation with the U.S. stock market is too volatile to serve as a reliable hedge during periods of financial stress. While Bitcoin occasionally exhibits a strong negative correlation with equities over short timeframes, this relationship fluctuates significantly over longer periods, indicating that Bitcoin does not consistently behave as a safe-haven asset.

The report suggests that Bitcoin’s primary value lies in its role as a portfolio diversifier. Its price movements often occur independently of traditional assets, providing potential for additional returns when other investments underperform. Even a modest allocation of 1–5% in Bitcoin can enhance a portfolio’s risk-adjusted returns, according to the analysis. Over the past five years, Bitcoin has delivered an annualized return exceeding 230%, outperforming both stocks and traditional safe-haven assets.

Marcin Kazmierczak, co-founder and COO of RedStone, emphasizes that for Bitcoin to mature into a true safe-haven asset, it requires increased institutional adoption and broader acceptance. Such developments could reduce Bitcoin’s volatility and strengthen its position as a stable component in investment portfolios. Recent trends indicate a decline in Bitcoin’s volatility, with its weekly volatility reaching a 563-day low in April and its realized volatility falling below that of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 in early May.

In conclusion, while Bitcoin may not yet fulfill the role of a safe-haven asset, its characteristics make it a valuable addition to diversified investment portfolios. As the cryptocurrency continues to mature and gain institutional support, its potential to act as a reliable hedge against market downturns may increase.
