Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi has proposed a novel idea to integrate cryptocurrency into the operations of the Panama Canal. Speaking at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas on May 29, Mizrachi suggested that ships transiting the canal could pay tolls in Bitcoin to receive expedited passage. “We have a canal — what if you get a perk for paying in Bitcoin, get your ship to go quicker if you pay in Bitcoin,” Mizrachi posited during the panel discussion. The proposal aims to modernize the canal’s payment systems and attract a new wave of tech-savvy clients interested in utilizing digital currencies.
The Panama Canal, a critical artery for global trade connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, currently processes payments in traditional fiat currencies. Introducing Bitcoin as a payment option could streamline transactions, reduce fees, and position Panama as a forward-thinking hub for maritime commerce.
However, the proposal raises several questions regarding implementation, regulatory compliance, and the volatility of cryptocurrency values. Experts caution that while the idea is innovative, it would require significant infrastructure upgrades and legal frameworks to manage potential risks.
Mizrachi’s suggestion reflects a broader trend of governments and institutions exploring the integration of blockchain technology into public services. If realized, this initiative could set a precedent for other nations considering similar adaptations in their critical infrastructures. As discussions continue, stakeholders from the maritime industry, financial sectors, and regulatory bodies will need to collaborate to assess the feasibility and potential impact of such a transformative approach to canal operations.
