British officials are reportedly reconsidering the development of a consumer facing digital pound. Instead of introducing a central bank digital currency, the Bank of England is urging commercial banks to accelerate digital payment innovations. Governor Andrew Bailey has said he would need substantial justification for a new form of money if private sector payment systems prove sufficient. Although the digital pound design phase continues, policymakers are watching whether fintech innovation replicates the efficiency goals without state issued tokens. Rather than abandon the idea entirely, the BoE seems content to observe market led improvements before committing to legislative or technological steps.
